When it was founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey in Elizabeth, the university was the fourth chartered institution of higher education in the American colonies. Due to that reason, it’s one of the nine Colonial Colleges that was developed before the American Revolution. Before it’s located in Princeton, New Jersey, the institution was located in Newark until 1747. In 1896, the institution was renamed Princeton University. Although the university had close ties to the Presbyterian Church, it doesn’t require its students about religious thing for the admission requirement.
